Mysterious Disease Kills Six Children in Imo State
A wave of panic has gripped the Mbutu community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State following the outbreak of a strange disease that has claimed the lives of at least six children in under one week.
The affected children, aged between one and six years, reportedly died within a short period, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
Schools Shut Down for Seven Days
Emergency Measures Implemented
In response to the tragic deaths, all nursery, primary, and secondary schools across the four autonomous communities of Mbutu—Mbutu Ancient Kingdom, Mbutu Nweorie, Mbutu Ukwu, and Mbutu Nwenkwo have been ordered to shut down for seven days.
According to Iheukwumere Henry Alaribe, Chairman of Aboh Mbaise LGA, the school closures are aimed at curbing further spread of the unidentified illness and safeguarding children’s lives.
“In response to this situation, the executive chairman has ordered the temporary closure of all nursery, primary, and secondary schools in Mbutu for seven days,” Alaribe stated.
Children’s Day Activities Cancelled
As an additional safety measure, children from Mbutu will not participate in the nationwide Children’s Day celebration scheduled for May 27, 2025.
WHO and State Health Authorities Investigating Outbreak
The World Health Organization (WHO) is collaborating with the Department of Disease Prevention and Control under the Imo State Ministry of Health and medical personnel in Aboh Mbaise to identify the cause of the illness and contain its spread.
Plans are also underway to work closely with the Imo State Government and other relevant agencies to ensure a swift response to the public health emergency.
Parents Urged to Vaccinate Children Immediately
Authorities are calling on parents and guardians in the area to urgently vaccinate their children, emphasizing the importance of immunization in preventing infectious diseases.
Public Urged to Remain Calm
While investigations are ongoing, Alaribe has appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with health officials.
“Efforts are being intensified to contain the outbreak. The general public is advised to stay calm, support health workers, and await further updates,” he said.
