Ighalo predicts Nigeria win over Egypt
Former Nigeria and Manchester United striker, Odion Ighalo, has tipped the Super Eagles to defeat Egypt in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations third-place match, describing the game as Nigeria’s chance for redemption.
Nigeria will face the Pharaohs after losing to host nation Morocco on penalties in the semi-final of the tournament.
Super Eagles seek consolation after semi-final exit
The Super Eagles were eliminated after a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco, following a tense semi-final encounter.
Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi missed their spot-kicks as Nigeria fell short of reaching the final.
‘Only chance to redeem themselves’ — Ighalo
Speaking on SuperSport while on punditry duties, Ighalo acknowledged that the third-place fixture is often unpopular with players but insisted it remains important.
“I know they don’t want to play third-place, but it’s still a chance to fight for a bronze. I was there in 2019 too,” Ighalo said.
“I was sad against Algeria in the semi-final, but this is what it is. Egypt wants to redeem themselves, to get something going back home.”
World Cup absence raises stakes
The former Wolves forward said Nigeria must approach the game aggressively, noting that the Super Eagles have little else to show for their campaign.
“They’re not going to the World Cup. They are not playing the final, so they only have this chance now to redeem themselves,” he said.
“I believe Nigeria will do well in that game and try to win, because they don’t have anything to appease the fans back home. They’ll win that third place.”
Egypt also chasing consolation
Egypt booked a place in the third-place match after losing 1–0 to Senegal in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Sadio Mane’s solitary goal sent the Teranga Lions into the final, where they will face Morocco in the 2025 AFCON title match.
