Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that he was offered a ₦5 billion bribe to support the governor’s impeachment.
Ehie, who made the revelation on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, claimed the offer was made in October 2023 when he was still the Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He stated that he had documented the bribery attempt and shared the evidence for his protection.
“I was approached with ₦5 billion to support the impeachment of the governor, but I rejected it. I have kept records of everything that transpired,” he said.
He did not reveal the identities of those behind the plot but asserted that their intention was to destabilize the state government.
Allegations and Political Tensions
Ehie’s claim comes amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, where Governor Fubara has been in a power struggle with factions loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, recently accused Ehie of orchestrating the October 2023 bombing of the State Assembly complex on Governor Fubara’s orders. However, Ehie has strongly denied the allegations and has vowed to sue Nwaeke for criminal libel.
“This is a blatant lie. I had no involvement in any attack on the Assembly. I will be taking legal action against him,” he stated.

The political crisis in Rivers State has led to divisions within the state assembly, multiple court cases, and heightened instability. Governor Fubara and his supporters continue to face opposition from lawmakers and political figures aligned with Wike, fueling further uncertainty in the state’s leadership.
