Huawei Technologies has officially launched an Innovation Centre in Lagos as part of its commitment to deepening Nigeria’s digital transformation. The unveiling took place during the inaugural Huawei Day Nigeria 2025, themed “Accelerating Industrial Intelligence.”
The three-day event brought together top stakeholders in technology and governance, including the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani; Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat (representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu); and the Director-General of NITDA, Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi.
Speaking at the launch, Huawei Nigeria CEO Chris Lu highlighted the company’s 25-year journey in Nigeria and announced the debut of the country’s first Hyperscale Local Cloud. He emphasized that this infrastructure allows Nigerian businesses to store data locally, enjoy low latency, and benefit from sustainable tech through Huawei’s solar solutions.
“This is not just an investment in infrastructure; it’s an investment in Nigeria’s future,” Lu said.
Minister Bosun Tijani praised the initiative, noting that it aligns with the federal government’s strategy to position Nigeria as a creator—not just a consumer—of tech solutions.
Dr. Peter Zhou, President of Huawei’s Data Storage Product Line, showcased how AI is revolutionizing sectors from transportation to fintech. He introduced Huawei’s AI Data Lake and outlined plans to build AI-ready infrastructure through high-capacity storage and advanced networks.
Deputy Governor Hamzat lauded the development, calling the local cloud “a first-of-its-kind achievement” that addresses the country’s data sovereignty concerns.
The new Innovation Centre will serve as a hub for co-developing technology tailored to Nigeria’s needs, fostering innovation and positioning the country for greater relevance in the global tech space.
