Trial adjourned as prosecution seeks legal advice

A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal Lexus SUV crash that killed two members of Anthony Joshua’s inner circle, to February 25, 2026.

Kayode appeared in court on Tuesday, January 20, for the continuation of proceedings arising from the December 29, 2025, accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

Crash claimed two lives, injured Anthony Joshua

The crash occurred when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, his friends, and the driver collided with a stationary truck. Two passengers, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, died in the accident.

Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries. The former heavyweight boxing champion was later discharged from hospital after being certified clinically fit.

Driver faces four charges

Kayode is facing four charges, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

The offences are said to contravene provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.

Prosecution requests adjournment

During proceedings, prosecuting counsel Nijiwe Richard requested an adjournment to allow the case file to be forwarded to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s office through the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Defence counsel Olalekan Abiodun opposed the request, arguing that the prosecution had enough time to take the step earlier.

Court sets February 25 date

Ruling on the application, Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun granted the adjournment in the interest of justice and directed the prosecution to duplicate and submit the case file to the Attorney-General’s office.

Kayode, who was first arraigned on January 2, 2026, remains on N5 million bail with two sureties.
