Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, stating that while he disagrees with the recent Supreme Court rulings on the state’s lingering political disputes, his government remains bound by the court’s decisions.
Speaking during a statewide broadcast from Government House, Port Harcourt, on Sunday evening, Governor Fubara emphasized that his administration has always operated within the confines of the Constitution, adhering to due process and legal principles.
“Since taking office, we have conducted government affairs in accordance with the Constitution, due process, and the rule of law,” he stated.
The governor acknowledged that the court’s rulings have put the state in a challenging position but urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities peacefully. He reassured the public that his administration is focused on delivering good governance despite the circumstances.
“We are all aware of the recent Supreme Court judgments on the political disputes in our state. Although we do not agree with the decisions, we are obligated to comply as a law-abiding government,” he said.
Governor Fubara disclosed that he had consulted with his legal team, who assured him that the certified true copies of the judgments would be available by Friday, March 7, 2025. He promised that once received, his administration would thoroughly review and implement the decisions without hesitation to ensure the state’s progress.
In light of the rulings, the governor directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take over the management of the 23 local government councils until fresh elections are conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). He also instructed the outgoing local government chairmen to formally hand over power to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025.
“Given that caretaker arrangements have been deemed illegal in the local government system, I am directing the Heads of Local Government Administration to assume leadership of the 23 councils until new elections are conducted,” he declared.
Governor Fubara concluded by urging the people of Rivers State to remain peaceful and law-abiding as his administration continues to fulfill its responsibilities to the citizens.
