Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, Jimmy Odukoya, has revealed the divine reason behind his signature dreadlocks — and it’s more than just a style choice.
In a recent sermon, Pastor Odukoya shared how his appearance is rooted in obedience to a clear instruction from God. Before stepping fully into his pastoral role, he sought divine direction, specifically asking if he should cut his hair. The answer? A firm “No” from God.
“Before I came back [to pastor], one of the things I asked the Lord was whether or not I should cut my hair. And the Lord told me not to cut my hair,” he recalled.
To confirm what he heard, he asked his sister, Pastor Tolu Odukoya-Ijogun, to also seek God’s face about it — without telling her what he’d received. Her response matched his word-for-word.
“I knew what God had said to me, so I told my sister to go pray and that God would speak to her. She came back and said, ‘You’re not supposed to cut your hair.’ And I said, ‘I know. God already told me.’”
But the story doesn’t end there.
Pastor Jimmy shared a remarkable encounter that confirmed this divine instruction in the most unexpected way. A woman flew all the way from Zimbabwe just to attend his church in Lagos — driven by a prophetic vision she had back in 2016.
“She said people thought she was crazy,” Odukoya recounted. “She told them, ‘I’m going to Nigeria just to attend church.’”
According to the woman, she had a vivid vision in 2016 while in New York during Thanksgiving. In the vision, she saw a man with dreadlocks speaking to her with power and authority, holding a long sword. Lightning and thunder flowed from the sword, burning away a symbolic dog on her shoulder — representing the heavy burdens in her life. She never forgot the vision, but had no idea the man even existed.
Fast forward to 2025, she faced a series of personal tragedies — a devastating breakup, financial loss in a divorce, and the death of her mother in her arms. Searching for answers, she turned to YouTube for spiritual guidance — and there he was: the man from her vision, dreadlocks and all.
“She said, ‘When I saw your video, I screamed. I didn’t even know pastors could have long hair! But there you were the man from my vision.’”
Even more stunning? In 2016 the same year she had the vision Pastor Jimmy didn’t have long hair.
“Here’s what’s crazy,” he said. “In 2016, I didn’t have my hair. But the God who sees and knows everything knew that by February 2025, one of His daughters would need to see that man hair and all preaching online. If I had cut my hair, maybe that connection would’ve never happened.”
With passion and conviction, Pastor Jimmy closed his message by saying, “God was making me keep my hair to save a life”.
