Afrobeats artist Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, popularly known as Skales, has reacted to recent calls by Nigerian authorities urging youths to join the military, questioning the rationale behind the appeals.
thewatch.ng earlier reported that government officials and advocacy groups have been encouraging young Nigerians to consider military service amid declining interest in the armed forces.
Skales, however, expressed his reservations about the appeals, criticising the country’s treatment of military personnel. Taking to his X handle on Saturday, the singer wrote:
“Nigeria don’t honor its hero’s and them dey ask you to join soldier… meanwhile soldiers dey suffer lol.”
The post triggered a wave of reactions, with some social media users accusing him of discouraging national service.
One user, @kheeng_diamond, wrote:
“You don’t want to serve the country and you are also discouraging those that want to? Stop viewing reality from your own perspective alone.”
In response, Skales stood by his views, adding:
“lol I’m representing my country with music na… how much dem dey pay soldier again wey dey risk their live for all of us? Go join na.”
His remarks have added fuel to an ongoing debate about patriotism, military welfare, and the government’s approach to engaging Nigerian youth.
