The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has refuted widespread reports alleging that Fejiro Sharon Oteri, a 300-level student of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, was not attended to due to the university clinic being closed at night.
In a statement issued by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Musibau Olawale, and dated April 10, 2025, the university described the claims as “malicious and unfounded,” confirming that Oteri was brought to the university clinic around 11:30am on April 8 and received immediate emergency care.
“The student was rushed in with nil respiratory movements, nil pulse, and nonreactive pupils. Our medical team responded with resuscitative efforts, after which she was transferred in the university ambulance to a tertiary hospital,” Dr. Olawale said.
Convulsion Report and Medical History
Dr. Olawale noted that the late student collapsed during academic activities and was reported to have experienced convulsions and urinary incontinence before arriving at the clinic—information provided by the students who brought her in.
“There was a history of convulsion following a fall in the laboratory. These were critical indicators of a medical emergency, and we acted accordingly,” the CMD added.
Clinic Was Not Closed — FUOYE CMD
Addressing the rumor that FUOYE’s Health Centre shuts down by 4pm, Dr. Olawale clarified that the clinic operates 24-hour services, even during weekends and student breaks.
“Since the employment of doctors in 2013, we have always had a doctor, nurse, ambulance driver, and other staff on call. Our facilities include 24/7 electricity, powered by a solar inverter and a dedicated diesel generator,” he said.
He also cited records of emergency cases, including asthma patients and sickle cell warriors, who have received treatment during night shifts as proof of consistent health services.

The university expressed deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, calling her death a tragic and painful loss.
