Tension is rising as officials appointed to lead Nigeria’s 12 River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) continue to besiege the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) in Abuja, demanding their long-overdue appointment letters.
Despite being appointed on December 18, 2024, the officials have now spent over ten weeks in limbo, unable to assume their roles.
Initially, many traveled individually to Abuja to inquire about their letters but left empty-handed. However, in recent weeks, they have coordinated their efforts, gathering in groups to press their demands at the SGF’s office.
Unclear Delays and Growing Frustration
A source close to the matter expressed frustration over the lack of transparency in the delay.
“At first, we were told there were minor inaccuracies to correct. Then, specific dates were given for the release of the letters—but those deadlines came and went. Now, it feels like something else is at play.”
With no official explanation, many appointees have been forced to stay in Abuja, racking up significant personal expenses on hotel accommodations while waiting.
A source within the SGF’s office questioned the rationale behind the continued delay, warning that it could sabotage the Tinubu administration’s agricultural objectives.
“It’s difficult to understand why the appointment letters are being withheld, especially since this delay is crippling the effectiveness of the River Basin Authorities.”
Impact on Agriculture and Food Security
Industry experts warn that the River Basin Authorities, which play a crucial role in Nigeria’s food security, are operating at reduced capacity due to the absence of their management teams.
A senior official emphasized the severity of the situation:
“These are not just board members—they are the Managing Directors and key officials responsible for the day-to-day running of the agencies. Without them in place, operations are significantly hampered.”
The RBDAs are critical to dry-season farming, water resource management, and rural infrastructure development. Their work ensures sustainable water access for agriculture, stabilizes food supply, attracts investment, creates jobs, and contributes to economic stability.
