The immediate past Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has shed light on her decision to step down from the role.
In a speech delivered on Monday, Meranda stated that her resignation was necessary to uphold the integrity of the legislative institution.
Meranda, who assumed office as Speaker on January 13, 2025, explained that ongoing leadership disputes had threatened the unity of the House, prompting her to make the difficult decision. She, however, reaffirmed her commitment to serving the people of Apapa Constituency 1 and Lagos State.

Meranda emphasized that her resignation was a personal sacrifice aimed at resolving the leadership crisis within the Assembly. She acknowledged the role her family has played in promoting democracy and good governance and reiterated her dedication to these principles.
“It is with a sense of responsibility that I resign my position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective March 3, 2025,” she stated.
She explained that while she accepted the position in January, the challenges that followed posed a threat to the democratic stability of the House. “Our mandate is to protect the good people of Lagos State and ensure good governance,” she added.
Meranda expressed gratitude to her colleagues, Assembly staff, and supporters for their solidarity during her short tenure.
“I am not a quitter; however, I made this bold decision to safeguard the integrity of this legislative institution and prevent further conflicts,” she said.
She urged her fellow lawmakers to remain steadfast in upholding justice and fairness, assuring those who had been criticized for standing on the side of fair play that there would be opportunities to correct any wrongs.
“As leaders, we must not allow personal or political conflicts to destabilize the House we have built,” she stated.
She concluded by thanking her colleagues and supporters for their understanding, acknowledging the supremacy of party decisions, and officially stepping down as Speaker.
