A Kenyan court on Thursday sentenced former Kiambu County governor, Ferdinand Waititu, to 12 years in prison after finding him guilty of fraud and conflict of interest, the state prosecution service announced.
Waititu, a prominent figure in the country’s anti-corruption crackdown, was convicted alongside his wife and three others. Prosecutors accused him of irregularly awarding road construction contracts worth 588 million Kenyan shillings ($4.5 million), according to media reports.
The sentencing marks a significant victory for Kenya’s anti-graft efforts, as Waititu is one of the highest-ranking officials to be convicted under the ongoing anti-corruption campaign.
