Former Abia Governors Hold Strategic Meeting in Umuahia
Former Abia State governors Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Orji have held a high-level political meeting in Umuahia, signalling the emergence of a coordinated plan to challenge Governor Alex Otti ahead of the 2027 general election.
The meeting, held on Friday, brought together political figures who governed or held public office in Abia State between 2009 and 2023, a period spanning three successive administrations.
Kalu Pushes for Unified Political Bloc
Speaking during the gathering, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North in the National Assembly, said the objective was to mobilise political forces from past administrations into a single, formidable bloc.
Kalu proposed expanding the group to include all former political office holders from the same period, arguing that their political experience and contributions to Abia State should not be dismissed.
According to him, the collective — referred to as “The Team” — played a crucial role in shaping the state’s political and developmental trajectory.
‘Governance Is a Relay’ — Kalu Defends Past Administrations
Addressing criticisms that previous governments failed the state, Kalu rejected claims of irrelevance, insisting that governance is a continuous process rather than an isolated effort.

“Leadership is a relay,” Kalu said. “I handed over to Senator T.A. Orji, who handed over to Okezie Ikpeazu. No single individual can claim we achieved nothing. If we did nothing, where would our people be today?”
He stressed that no administration operates in isolation, adding that the progress of any government is built on the foundations laid by its predecessors.
Clear 2027 Objective: Political Change in Abia
Kalu made it clear that the group’s political ambition is firmly focused on 2027, declaring that a change in leadership must occur in Abia State.
He noted that the emerging alliance is not restricted by party affiliation, describing it as a cross-party platform open to political allies across different parties who share the same objective.
Rising Political Pressure on Governor Alex Otti
The meeting signals the most coordinated political push so far against Governor Alex Otti, whose Labour Party-led government came to power in 2023 on a reform-driven mandate.
With former power brokers now openly regrouping, analysts say Abia’s political landscape may be heading toward an intense and highly contested 2027 election cycle, marked by a clash between the old guard and the current administration.
