Finland Slams Terror Charges on Simon Ekpa
Finnish authorities have officially charged Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-born Finnish citizen and leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), with multiple terrorism-related offenses. The charges, announced on May 16, 2025, accuse Ekpa of public incitement to commit terrorist crimes and participating in the activities of a terrorist group.
The alleged offenses occurred between 2021 and 2024 in Lahti, Finland, where Ekpa resides.
Accused of Fueling Unrest in Nigeria’s Southeast
Ekpa has been a controversial figure in Nigeria, where his online broadcasts and directives — including orders for sit-at-home protests — have been linked to escalating violence and civil unrest in the South-East region.
As the self-declared “Prime Minister” of the BRGIE, Ekpa has openly supported the Biafran independence movement, drawing criticism and concern from both Nigerian and international observers.
Arrest, Investigation, and Trial Timeline
Ekpa was arrested in November 2024 by Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). Authorities also froze his assets and seized materials related to the alleged offenses.
While four others were detained in connection with the case, charges against them were eventually dropped due to lack of evidence.
Ekpa is expected to face trial in June 2025, where he will respond to all charges. He has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that his actions are in pursuit of political self-determination for the Biafran people.
