The Federal Government has announced an ambitious plan to construct 77,400 affordable housing units across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, targeting low-income earners—including those earning as little as ₦30,000 per month.
The initiative, part of the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme, aims to ease Nigeria’s housing deficit and provide decent accommodation for citizens regardless of their income level.
According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, 80% of the units will be allocated to Nigerians who can commit up to one-third of their monthly income towards homeownership. For example, those earning ₦30,000 monthly will be eligible to own a home by paying ₦10,000 per month.
The remaining 20% of the units will be distributed free of charge to vulnerable groups such as widows, orphans, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Each housing estate will be developed with key infrastructure and amenities, including schools, clinics, recreational spaces, police outposts, and shopping centres to ensure a fully functional and livable community.
The project, expected to be completed within a year of its launch, will be financed through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
This move reinforces Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive development and sustainable housing for all Nigerians, especially the economically disadvantaged.
