FG Move to Increase Salaries of President, VP, Ministers and Senators
The Federal Government is set to review the salaries of top political office holders, including the President, Vice President, Ministers, Senators, and other elected officials.
This was revealed by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), which confirmed that the review is part of an ongoing process to adjust remuneration in line with current economic realities.
RMAFC’s Position
RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Bello Shehu, explained that the commission is empowered by the constitution to determine appropriate salaries and allowances for political, public, and judicial office holders. He noted that the review will cover both salaries and benefits.
Public Reaction
The move is expected to spark nationwide debate, especially as ordinary Nigerians continue to battle rising inflation, fuel subsidy removal effects, and economic hardship. Critics have often argued that the pay of political office holders is already excessive compared to average workers’ wages.
What’s Next?
The proposed salary increment is still under review and will be formally communicated once approved by the Presidency and National Assembly.
