The Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) has begun compiling a list of retired civil servants who defaulted on housing loan repayments during their time in service.
This was revealed in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja by the Board’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Ngozi Obiechina.
Citing the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Salamatu Ahmed, the statement explained that the initiative is part of efforts to reclaim mortgaged properties from retirees who failed to settle their loan obligations.
The move comes on the heels of a recent circular from the Permanent Secretary, Career Management Office, in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Patience Oyekunle. The circular reminded civil servants that a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness from both the FGSHLB and the MDA Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society is a mandatory requirement before retirement.
Ahmed emphasized that the board will pursue legal means to repossess defaulted properties, citing Public Service Rules 021002 (p), which mandate the certificate as a prerequisite for retirement.
She reiterated that the FGSHLB has the authority to seize mortgaged properties if retirees leave service without settling their debts—and that this directive also affects those already out of service but with outstanding loan balances.
“All affected retirees are expected to urgently regularise their loan status and obtain the necessary clearance certificates,” Ahmed stated.
She added that the names of defaulters are being compiled and will be forwarded to regulatory agencies to aid debt recovery.
This development follows a previous announcement by the board, reinforcing its determination to enforce compliance and uphold due process in recovering government-issued loans.
