FG Declares Tuesday, July 15, Public Holiday in Honour of the late Ex president Buhari
The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a national public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13 in London at the age of 82.
This was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who approved the one-day holiday as part of a national tribute to the late statesman.
The announcement follows the President’s earlier directive for a seven-day national mourning period, during which flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country, from Sunday, July 13 through Saturday, July 19.
According to the Presidency, Buhari will be laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in line with Islamic rites.
Katsina State Observes Monday as Work-Free Day
Separately, the Katsina State Government declared Monday, July 14, a work-free day to allow residents to mourn and offer prayers for the late leader. The declaration was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Garba Faskari.
Katsina, Buhari’s home state, has also planned a series of events leading to the funeral, including special prayers and public tributes.

President Tinubu described Buhari as a “dedicated patriot and servant-leader” whose legacy of integrity and national service will live on. Condolences have continued to pour in from leaders across Africa and the international community, praising Buhari’s military and democratic leadership.
