FCTA Promises Timely Compensation for Guzape and Kpaduma Communities
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has pledged that residents of Guzape and Kpaduma communities affected by the ongoing road construction project will be duly and promptly compensated.
The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, made this commitment during a meeting on Monday in Abuja with traditional rulers and community representatives from both areas.
Addressing Delays and Ensuring Fairness
Wike explained that the meeting was convened to resolve concerns about the delayed relocation of residents living along the road corridor marked for development. He expressed worry over the continued occupation of these areas, which are crucial to the expansion of the road network aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity in Abuja.
Emphasizing justice and equity, the minister assured stakeholders that every affected individual would be fairly treated and compensated. He further promised that a Right of Occupancy would be granted for new resettlement zones, ensuring legal protection for relocated residents.
Increased Compensation and Legal Guarantees
Wike directed the Director of Resettlement to assess the financial implications of the resettlement plan. Noting that the current compensation rate was inadequate, he ordered a 100% increase in the payout.
“Increase their rate. If they are supposed to get N50, give them N100.
We are not here to displace anyone unjustly. This is about building a better Abuja for all,” Wike stated.
He emphasized that only structures situated directly on the designated road corridor would qualify for compensation not the entire community.
Traditional Leaders Express Support
The Sa’peyi of Garki, Alhaji Usman Nga-Kupi, who led the delegation of traditional rulers, thanked the minister for his openness and willingness to engage with the affected communities.
Acknowledging the benefits of the road project, Nga-Kupi pledged the community’s cooperation and support.
“We are grateful for the minister’s assurance and the respect shown to our people. We will support this effort in the interest of peace and progress,” he said.
Balancing Development and Heritage
Minister Wike acknowledged the emotional and cultural importance of ancestral lands to the communities. However, he stressed that the road project forms a vital part of Abuja’s broader development strategy, which occasionally requires making tough decisions.
