FCT Police Deny Assassination Attempt on Navy Officer Lt. Yerima, Call Viral Claims False
Police Declare Social Media Reports “False and Unverified”
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has refuted claims that Nigerian Navy officer Lt. A.M. Yerima survived an assassination attempt in Abuja.
In a statement late Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the police had no record of any such attack or related incident within the FCT.
She noted that the narrative circulating across social media platforms does not align with any official report received by law enforcement agencies.
Command Warns Against Spreading Panic
Adeh urged the public to disregard the “false information,” warning that the circulation of unverified claims can create unnecessary fear among residents.
She advised citizens to stay alert and direct any security concerns to the nearest police division rather than relying on speculative online reports.
Viral Claims Linked Incident to Wike–Yerima Clash
The police rebuttal comes after widespread online reports alleging that Lt. Yerima narrowly escaped an assassination attempt—claims that gained momentum following his recent public confrontation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Earlier reports, including one by Vanguard, cited unnamed military sources who claimed the officer was trailed around 6:30pm on Sunday by men in two unmarked black Hilux vans from the NIPCO Filling Station along the Kubwa Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.
According to the reports, Yerima allegedly executed a “strategic maneuver” to evade what sources described as “potential assassins.” They also claimed the matter had been escalated to relevant authorities.
Incident Follows Viral Clash Over Abuja Property
The controversy comes days after a video surfaced showing a heated exchange between Lt. Yerima and Minister Wike at a property site in Gaduwa District, Abuja.
Wike had accused the officer of obstructing his directive on land reportedly occupied by the military.
