A trailer driver has died following a violent crash at Otedola Bridge on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Friday morning, causing massive traffic congestion that extended to the Kara axis.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the accident involved two heavy-duty trailers—one carrying sand and the other granite. The driver of the sand-laden trailer was trapped and later confirmed dead. His body was taken to Ikeja General Hospital.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq described the incident as a “tragic road traffic catastrophe” that temporarily crippled vehicular movement along the expressway. He added that a second crash occurred nearby, further worsening the gridlock.
Nearly 80 per cent of the carriageway was blocked, prompting emergency agencies to implement traffic diversion measures. Motorists from Mowe, Kara Bridge, and Redemption Camp were rerouted through the Ojodu–Olole axis via Agidingbi, Coca-Cola, Secretariat, and 7-Up to reach Gbagada or Ojota.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the prolonged congestion, linking it to the Otedola Bridge crash and ongoing repair works on the Kara Bridge expansion joints.
FRSC spokesperson Afolabi Odunsi said personnel from multiple agencies were on-site to tow the crashed vehicles and manage traffic along the expressway to ease the situation.
