One Killed, One Injured in Abuja Explosion Near Mogadishu Barracks
An explosion rocked the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday afternoon, killing one person and injuring another near the Mogadishu Barracks along the Mararaba-Nyanya Bypass in Abuja.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:50 p.m., caused panic among nearby residents and commuters, triggering a swift security and emergency response.
Conflicting Reports Surround Cause of the Blast
Suicide Bomb or Mobile Device?
Eyewitnesses at the scene, including a military source who requested anonymity, suggested that the blast was triggered by an explosive concealed in a rubber container, allegedly carried by a suspected suicide bomber.
However, military officials later provided a conflicting narrative, stating the explosion may have resulted from a mobile phone-linked device, not an improvised explosive device (IED).
Heavy Security Presence and Emergency Response
Our correspondent observed a massive security presence at the scene, with operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS), Police, and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) cordoning off the area for clearance and forensic investigation.

Police Statement Confirms One Fatality, One Injury
The FCT Police Command confirmed the incident in an official statement. According to SP Josephine Adeh, the Command’s spokesperson, one male victim died at the scene while another was injured and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
“The affected area was swiftly cordoned off for clearance and forensic analysis to ensure the safety of commuters and residents,” the statement read.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit was immediately deployed to the location, and a full-scale investigation has commenced.

While authorities have not officially confirmed or ruled out terrorism, residents are advised to remain calm and report any suspicious persons or objects to security agencies.
“There is no cause for alarm. We encourage members of the public to report any suspicious persons or objects to security agencies without delay,” the Command emphasized.
