Mkpa Oju Uka Refutes Reports of London Imprisonment
Former Deputy Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, Mkpa Oju Uka, has dismissed reports alleging he is in a London prison for drug trafficking and mortgage fraud as false and malicious.
Speaking on Wednesday, Uka described the viral claims as fabricated stories orchestrated by political rivals aiming to tarnish his image.
“The report is false and the handiwork of my political enemies,” he stated.
Uka Says He Has Lived Legitimately in the UK Since 1999
Uka explained that he moved from Lome, Togo, to the United Kingdom in 1999 and has since lived a law-abiding and productive life.
According to him, he earned a living through legitimate means, including working in a used clothing company and taking up jobs in retail stores on a part-time basis.
He emphasized that his properties in the UK were acquired legally, with support from his wife.
“I have worked hard and lived decently since I came to the UK. The stories about fraud or drug cases are baseless,” he said.
Mortgage Brokers’ Investigation Led to Court Action
The former Deputy Chairman recounted that in 2017, he received correspondence from the National Crime Agency (NCA) notifying him that some of his properties were subject to a court freezing order.
He said he cooperated fully, providing the agency with documents that clearly showed the sources of his income.
Uka explained that the NCA’s action stemmed from a broader investigation into the activities of mortgage brokers who had handled his applications and were later found to be under investigation for irregularities.
Court Cleared Him of Drug and Fraud Allegations
According to Uka, the court granted a summary judgment based solely on technical mortgage documentation issues, stressing that it had nothing to do with any criminal offense.
He said the court explicitly dismissed all allegations linking him or his family to drug trafficking or fraud, citing lack of evidence.
“Importantly, the court dismissed all claims linking me or my family to drug trafficking or criminal activity. At no point was I arrested, detained, charged, or imprisoned,” Uka clarified.
Political Motives Behind False Reports
Uka accused his political opponents of spreading false narratives to damage his reputation and discredit his record in public service.
He urged the public to disregard the reports, describing them as an attack on his integrity and a desperate move by those threatened by his political influence.
