Edo Govt Calls for Calm After Ekpoma Protests
The Edo State Government has appealed to residents of Ekpoma and surrounding communities to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of security operatives following protests that paralysed commercial activities in the area.
The appeal comes amid heightened security concerns and public demonstrations that involved road blockages and disruptions to movement.
Government Warns Against Road Blockades, Disruptions
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, the state government acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to express grievances but cautioned that security-related protests must be handled responsibly.
Afegbua warned that blocking roads and disrupting movement in the name of protest could undermine security operations and expose residents to additional risks.
He noted that such actions could also be exploited by criminal elements.
“Matters of security require calm, coordination, and constructive engagement. Actions such as blocking roads and disrupting movement do not aid security operations and may inadvertently expose residents to further risks,” the statement said.
Okpebholo’s Security Strategy Emphasised
The commissioner said Governor Monday Okpebholo has remained responsive to genuine safety concerns since assuming office, stressing that effective security solutions depend on intelligence sharing and community collaboration.

Strengthening the Edo Security Corps
Expanding neighbourhood watch initiatives
Continuous engagement with community leaders, traditional institutions, and neighbouring states
Residents were encouraged to use these platforms to report security concerns and support law enforcement efforts.
Edo Govt Open to Dialogue
The government reiterated its openness to dialogue, assuring the people of Ekpoma and the wider Edo community that security strategies are under continuous review.
“Uncoordinated protests can distract security agencies from ongoing operations and complicate efforts to address criminal activities,” Afegbua added.

Esan West LGA Imposes 7pm Okada, Keke Restriction
Meanwhile, the Acting Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, Albert Blessing Ebhodaghe, has announced a daily restriction on the movement of commercial and private motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke) across the LGA.
Under the directive, all Okada and Keke operations must cease by 7:00 pm daily, with immediate effect.
Security Agencies Directed to Enforce Order
Ebhodaghe said security agencies operating in the local government area have been instructed to enforce the restriction strictly.
Operators or individuals found violating the order will face sanctions in line with existing laws and regulations.
The chairman described the measure as a proactive response to emerging security threats, particularly during nighttime hours when criminal activities are more prevalent.
‘Public Safety Is Our Priority’ – Esan West Chairman
While acknowledging the importance of Okada and Keke services to local transportation, Ebhodaghe stressed that public safety remains the top priority of his administration.
He urged residents and transport operators to cooperate fully with the policy, adding that the local government would continue to engage stakeholders and monitor the impact of the restriction.
The Esan West Local Government Area reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring peace, stability, and improved security across its communities.
