Datti Baba-Ahmed Warns Against Atiku’s 2027 Presidential Ambitions
Former Labour Party vice presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has criticized Atiku Abubakar for seeking another presidential term in 2027. Baba-Ahmed said Atiku has been pursuing the presidency since his NYSC days, and urged the former PDP presidential candidate to give the younger generation a chance to lead.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed said the expensive and entrenched nature of Nigerian politics discourages young politicians with innovative ideas.
“It’s Time for a New Generation”
Baba-Ahmed emphasized that Nigeria has capable young leaders ready to take charge:
“When I was doing my NYSC, Baba Atiku was an aspirant, and in 2018 we contested primaries together. In 2023 we contested again, I as a vice president elsewhere when his vice president had left him. For God’s sake in 2027 again?”
He added:
“There is the need for a new generation of Nigerian leaders and they do exist. The whole new generation is waiting for a leader to lead them to a new party. There are good Nigerians capable of solving the country’s problems, but they are discouraged by the expensive, difficult, and treacherous system full of godfathers and empty promises.”
Baba-Ahmed argued that the political system’s high cost and reliance on patronage prevent younger politicians with better ideas from participating effectively.
Atiku Joins ADC Ahead of 2027
Atiku Abubakar, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he plans to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The ADC also includes notable figures such as Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Chibuike Amaechi, former Governor of Rivers State, signaling a competitive field for the next election.
