Public commentator Daniel Regha has ignited widespread debate on social media following his reaction to the reported defection of Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Reports indicate Abba Abubakar has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, where he reportedly declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
The move has drawn significant attention given Atiku Abubakar’s plan to contest the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid the formation of a new opposition coalition ahead of the next general election.
Reacting to the development, Regha wrote on social media:
“Imagine running for office and your own son doesn’t believe in your vision, that he had to side with the opposition you jumped ship to oppose. Speaks volumes.”
The post went viral, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians. Some, like Maximum, agreed, saying: “If your own family and friends can openly show they don’t stand with you, then nobody should stand with you. Charity begins at home.”
Others, including Celestine, saw it differently: “That’s politics. By doing so, he’s trying to build his own political identity. He’s just starting his journey.”
Many suggested deeper strategic reasons behind the defection. Osisanya claimed Abba Abubakar may have joined the APC to destabilise it from within, while Lumii bluntly remarked: “Atiku doesn’t even believe in his vision.”
As the debate continues, the defection has added a fresh layer of intrigue to Nigeria’s political landscape, with many questioning whether it reflects strategy, pragmatism, or internal disagreement.
