A customary court in Rumuogba, Rivers State, has ruled that Mrs. Kate Ngbor can no longer bear her former husband’s surname, 11 years after their divorce.
In suit no: OCC/9/2021, Chief Sam Ngbor, the claimant, sought a court order preventing his ex-wife from continuing to use his name. After reviewing submissions from both legal representatives—E. O. Erhirhi Esq. for the claimant and R. U. Egwenre Esq. for the defendant—the court ruled in favor of the claimant.
The court declared that Mrs. Ngbor has no right to use the name “Ngbor” or “Sam-Ngbor” without explicit permission from her former husband. Consequently, she was ordered to revert to her maiden name or any other name of her choice, except for “Ngbor” or any variation of it.
Additionally, the court restrained her from presenting herself under the name “Mrs. Kate Ngbor” or “Mrs. Kate Sam-Ngbor” in any form going forward.
