Miriam Azubuike, one of the civil servants arrested in 2024 for allegedly embezzling pension funds belonging to Abia State, has given birth to a baby boy while in prison custody.
She delivered the child at a government-owned hospital, where the Abia State government reportedly covered her medical expenses, including post-delivery care.
Mrs. Azubuike and several co-defendants were arraigned before a Federal High Court in Umuahia on multiple charges. Although they were granted bail in 2025 with varying conditions, they were unable to meet the requirements for their release.
Some of Mrs. Azubuike’s friends, speaking anonymously, have appealed to the Abia State government to consider granting her bail so she can care for her newborn while awaiting trial.
