Adichie Says Son’s Death Could Have Been Prevented
Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has spoken publicly about the circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, alleging that medical negligence played a role.
In a statement released on Saturday, Adichie said her son passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, following complications linked to a medical procedure carried out at Euracare Hospital, Lagos.
According to her, Nkanu would still be alive if proper care and monitoring had been provided.
What Led to the Hospital Visit
Adichie explained that her son initially showed symptoms of what the family believed was a mild cold. However, his condition worsened and later developed into what she described as a serious infection.
As part of his medical evaluation, doctors recommended an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line, procedures that required sedation.
The child was taken to Euracare Hospital on January 6, 2026, a day before his death.

In her account, Adichie said her son was sedated with propofol but was not adequately monitored afterward.
She alleged that following the sedation, Nkanu became unresponsive, experienced seizures, and later went into cardiac arrest.
“These events,” she stated, “should not have happened under proper medical supervision.”
Adichie stressed that her son’s deterioration occurred after the procedure and not from the infection itself.
‘He Would Be Alive Today’
The author was unequivocal in her statement, saying her son’s death was not inevitable.
“He would be alive today if not for what happened at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” she said.
