Chelsea grind out crucial win under new manager
Chelsea secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to hand new head coach Liam Rosenior his first Premier League win.
Goals from Joao Pedro in the first half and Cole Palmer’s second-half penalty proved decisive, lifting the Blues above Brentford into sixth place on the table and easing early pressure on the new manager.
Brentford dominate possession but fail to convert
Despite the result, Brentford controlled large spells of the contest, finishing with more possession, shots, and efforts on target.
Kevin Schade was at the heart of the visitors’ early threat, testing Chelsea’s backline and passing up a clear shooting chance when he opted to square the ball to Mikkel Damsgaard.
Chelsea gradually settled, with Palmer curling an effort just over the bar and Joao Pedro seeing a penalty appeal waved away.
Joao Pedro punishes defensive error
The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after a costly mistake from Michael Kayode near the Brentford area.
Enzo Fernandez pounced on the loose ball and fed Joao Pedro, who struck powerfully past Caoimhin Kelleher to give Chelsea the lead against the run of play.
Brentford responded strongly. Damsgaard and Schade both went close, while Mathias Jensen struck the post as the Bees pressed for an equaliser.
Sanchez stands firm as pressure mounts
Chelsea had chances to extend their lead, but Alejandro Garnacho missed an open goal from close range.
At the other end, Robert Sanchez kept the hosts ahead early in the second half with a crucial one-on-one save from Schade.
Rosenior attempted to tighten midfield control by replacing Garnacho with Andrey Santos, but Brentford continued to push forward.
Igor Thiago squandered a clear opening when he headed wide from a promising position.
Palmer seals it from the spot
Chelsea finally capitalised on another Brentford error late in the game.
A misplaced pass from Nathan Collins and hesitation from Kelleher allowed substitute Liam Delap to steal in, forcing a clumsy challenge inside the area. The referee pointed to the spot.
Palmer calmly converted the penalty, sending Kelleher the wrong way to secure the win and end the contest.
The result gives Rosenior his first league victory as Chelsea boss and provides momentum as he continues to settle into the role.
