Authorities in Maryland, United States, have charged a 37-year-old man, Alexander Y. Gorokhov, with terrorism, arson, and attempted murder after a shocking fire broke out at Governor Wes Moore’s mansion on Saturday night.
According to court filings, Gorokhov, who reportedly lives near the governor’s residence, deliberately started the fire while Governor Moore, his family, and guests were celebrating a Passover dinner.
Local firefighters were called to the scene around 10:30 p.m. and quickly brought the blaze under control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident has raised serious concerns about political and religiously motivated violence in the U.S.
Authorities have not released a clear motive, but court documents revealed Gorokhov made troubling statements, claiming “God told me to do it,” and “this was just a warning.”
He is currently being held without bail and faces a slew of serious charges including first-degree arson, attempted first-degree murder, and acts of terrorism.
The FBI and local police are investigating the incident further, with concerns about Gorokhov’s mental health and any possible extremist connection.
