Lagos Govt to Residents: Report Landlords Demanding More Than One Year Rent
The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to landlords across the state, urging them to stop demanding more than one year’s rent from prospective tenants.
The directive came through the Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, who stated that such practices violate the state’s tenancy laws and place unnecessary pressure on residents.
“This act is illegal. Any landlord found collecting more than a year’s rent upfront from a tenant should be reported,” the Commissioner said in a statement on Sunday.
How to Report Landlords in Violation
The government has asked affected tenants to channel their complaints to the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) through its official website or helpline.
Officials say reports will be investigated and sanctions imposed on defaulters.
