The Watch NG can confirm that a United States District Court has ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to release previously withheld investigative records related to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This ruling follows a 2023 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by American transparency advocate, Aaron Greenspan, founder of PlainSite.org. The documents requested allegedly pertain to historical investigations into a suspected drug trafficking ring in the 1990s, involving Tinubu and three other individuals: Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele.
In her decision, Judge Beryl Howell criticized the agencies’ continued withholding of the information, describing it as “neither logical nor plausible,” and set a deadline of May 2, 2025, for the release of the records.
Responding to the ruling, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed any concerns, insisting that the forthcoming documents hold no revelations. He maintained that previous FBI reports did not indict Tinubu and confirmed that the President’s legal team is reviewing the court’s order.
This anticipated release is expected to cast new light on long-standing allegations surrounding Tinubu’s background, just as public scrutiny continues to mount ahead of major political decisions in Nigeria.
