Bayern Munich’s 27-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga came to an abrupt end on Saturday as struggling Augsburg produced a shock 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.
Japanese defender Hiroki Ito gave Bayern the lead midway through the first half with a header from a Michael Olise corner, marking Olise’s league-leading 14th assist of the season.
However, the home side looked unusually vulnerable at the back. Augsburg’s Arthur Chaves equalised by heading in an unguarded net from a corner, and Han-Noah Massengo sealed the win with a brilliant team goal nine minutes from time.
Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, starting in place of a rested Manuel Neuer, struggled to command the defence, and a first-half strike from Robin Fellhauer hit the post, a warning sign that went unheeded.
Despite pushing for an equaliser, Bayern saw Olise’s long-range effort hit the crossbar in the final moments. Striker Harry Kane had a quiet afternoon, unable to score for the defending champions.
The surprise defeat leaves Bayern 11 points clear of closest challengers Borussia Dortmund, having played one game more. Augsburg, winless in their previous five matches, move up to 13th place, four points clear of the relegation play-off zone.
