Fashola Appointed to Board of Global Health Group Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria
Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria (RTSL Nigeria), a global health organization dedicated to preventing cardiovascular diseases and epidemic threats.
RTSL Nigeria made the announcement on Friday, hailing Fashola’s over two decades of public service as a critical asset to its mission of saving lives through improved public health systems.
Founded by Dr. Tom Frieden, former Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), RTSL Nigeria opened its Abuja office in 2022 and works closely with governments and communities to combat the world’s most deadly health threats.
Global Recognition Meets Local Impact
Dr. Frieden, President and CEO of RTSL, expressed enthusiasm about Fashola’s appointment, stating:
“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Fashola to the RTSL Nigeria Board of Directors. He has demonstrated a commitment to improving lives and livelihoods in Nigeria through more than two decades of public service.”
Fashola’s leadership in public health gained international recognition during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, particularly during Nigeria’s swift and effective response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak. His efforts earned him the prestigious Stephen J. Solarz Award from the International Crisis Group.
He later served as the Minister of Power, Works and Housing under President Muhammadu Buhari, after holding the role of Chief of Staff in Lagos State before becoming Governor in 2007.
Fashola: “A Mission Worth Supporting”
Reacting to his appointment, Fashola expressed deep appreciation and pledged his commitment to the organization’s mission.
“I look forward to helping continue the progress in stopping preventable deaths from cardiovascular diseases and infectious disease outbreaks,” he said.
Fellow board member Professor Ibrahim Abubakar, Dean at University College London’s Faculty of Population Health Sciences, welcomed Fashola’s appointment, noting that his governance experience and health crisis leadership make him a valuable asset to the board.
