Former Special Adviser on Political Affairs in the Office of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has weighed in on persistent rumours suggesting a rift between President Bola Tinubu and his deputy.
In recent months, speculation has grown that President Tinubu may be sidelining Shettima, with some reports even hinting at a possible replacement ahead of the 2027 general elections. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has repeatedly dismissed these claims as unfounded.
Baba-Ahmed, who previously served as the spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), recently resigned from his advisory position, sparking further rumours. Some political commentators claimed his resignation was prompted by Shettima’s perceived marginalisation in the Tinubu administration.
However, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed addressed the rumours head-on.
“I didn’t see that. I find it odd. Between the two of them I think those rumours are cooked, to be honest,” he said.
He clarified that although he never had direct discussions with President Tinubu regarding his relationship with Shettima, his interactions with the Vice President painted a picture of cooperation and mutual respect.
“I never really interacted with the President. I never sat down with Tinubu to ask him how he felt about Shettima. But I spoke with Shettima. I can tell you only from Shettima’s perspective. I don’t think Shettima feels he’s been sidelined,” Baba-Ahmed explained.
“I don’t think he feels Tinubu has any grievance against him. I saw a President and a Vice President who work well. The synergy was there.”
His comments come as political tension rises ahead of the 2027 elections, with several camps jostling for influence within the ruling party.
