Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being desperate to hold on to power at any cost.Atiku criticized the APC-led government for allegedly using political violence and undermining democracy, citing recent incidents in Osun and Lagos states. His remarks were in response to the crisis in Osun, which resulted in the death of one person, and the security forces’ invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly. In a statement he personally signed, the former Vice President urged Nigerians to resist any attempts by the Tinubu administration to subvert democracy.According to Atiku:“Nigerians witnessed an alarming display of lawlessness as the Tinubu-led APC exposed its desperation to cling to power through political thuggery and a disregard for democratic principles.“In Osun State, the APC launched an attack on democracy, attempting to take over local government secretariats by force. Armed thugs, allegedly working under the party’s protection, tried to seize control of all 30 local government offices while the national leadership of the APC and the presidency remained silent.“If not for the courageous resistance of the Osun people, who stood firm against the APC’s aggression, democracy in the state would have been crushed.“Osun State will not bow to anti-democratic forces. The people have made it clear that they will not allow their rights to be stolen through intimidation.“We call on security agencies to uphold their constitutional duties with professionalism during the upcoming elections and not allow themselves to be used as tools for the APC’s agenda. The world is watching.“These are dangerous times. The APC has abandoned all pretenses of democratic governance and is resorting to brute force to maintain power, even as the people continue to reject them.“We commend the people of Osun for standing up against oppression. Their bravery serves as a beacon of hope in these challenging times.“The Tinubu-led APC has shown that it will stop at nothing to subvert democracy and impose itself against the will of the people. Nigerians must resist. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.“President Bola Tinubu and his supporters must put an end to these reckless acts of political sabotage, not just in Osun and Lagos, but across the country. Nigerians demand governance, not chaos. We will not allow our democracy to be hijacked. Enough is enough.”
