Atiku Abubakar Open to Supporting Younger Candidate in 2027
Former Vice President and key member of the opposition coalition, African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has declared that he is willing to step aside for a younger candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made the remarks during an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, stressing that his interest in the race is not about personal ambition but about rescuing Nigeria from what he described as poor leadership.
Not About Desperation, Atiku Insists
The former VP dismissed claims that he is desperate to become president, insisting that his priority is to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.
“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” Atiku said.
Call to Younger Nigerians
Atiku also urged young Nigerians to take active roles in politics and assured that he would give his full backing to any young and widely acceptable candidate who emerges under the ADC platform.
According to him, Nigeria needs “fresh energy, ideas, and leadership” to overcome its current challenges.
The Bigger Picture
Atiku’s remarks come amid growing calls for generational leadership change in Nigeria. Many political analysts believe the 2027 general elections could be a turning point, with younger candidates increasingly gaining visibility in national politics.
Whether Atiku will contest or play a kingmaker role remains to be seen, but his statement signals openness to a coalition that prioritizes youth and credibility over personal ambition.
