APC’s Basiru: Ganduje’s Resignation Not a Sign of Crisis
Ganduje’s Exit Was Commendable, Not Controversial
The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has dismissed suggestions that the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, signals a crisis within the ruling party.
Speaking during a media parley organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, in the South-West, Basiru stated that Ganduje’s departure was voluntary and honourable, highlighting his contributions to the party’s growth.
“If you look at the statement issued by the party, he was commended for the efforts he made in repositioning the party. Under his watch, we have more states coming into the party and administratively, the party was strengthened since our joint election on 3rd August, 2023,” he said.
No Crisis Within Party Ranks
Ganduje’s resignation has sparked speculation, with some suggesting it may be linked to behind-the-scenes political movements, particularly by former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is rumoured to be eyeing a return to the APC.
Basiru, however, described such reports as unfounded.
“This is not the first time that a party official has resigned. Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore also resigned before we assumed office. The resignation of Dr Ganduje does not portend any crisis. It is mere speculation,” he clarified.
APC Growing Stronger Despite Leadership Changes
Senator Basiru maintained that the APC remains stable and continues to expand its national reach under committed leadership. He credited Ganduje for helping solidify the party’s administrative structure and political gains.
“The party has continued to grow stronger. Ganduje’s legacy includes expanding our presence nationwide and consolidating our victories,” he said.
Adeleke Not Defecting to APC – Basiru
APC Chieftain Dispels Osun Defection Rumours
Senator Basiru also addressed swirling political rumours in Osun State, particularly the claim that Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is planning to defect to the APC.
He categorically denied the rumour, stating there is no truth to the defection talk.
“Adeleke is not joining our party. I know that as of today, decamping is not on board. Although APC is a beautiful bride for anybody that wants to join, I must say here that as a party man and an established politician, I am extremely loyal to Mr President,” Basiru stated.
The comment comes amid renewed political realignments across states ahead of the 2027 general elections.
What This Means for APC Going Forward
Despite the leadership reshuffle, the APC is projecting unity and stability. With Senator Basiru assuring Nigerians that Ganduje’s resignation is not a cause for alarm and denying Governor Adeleke’s alleged defection, the party is working to maintain its internal cohesion and external appeal.
As political strategizing heats up across the nation, the APC leadership appears focused on consolidating its influence and preparing for future electoral contests.
