APC Condemns Impeachment Move in Rivers State
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has warned that the state cannot allow what it described as a “legislative coup d’etat” against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof Ngozi Ordu.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the party called on the Chief Judge of Rivers State to comply with a recent High Court injunction that restrains the judiciary from acting on House of Assembly resolutions relating to the impeachment.
Party Questions Legislature’s Actions
The APC said it has reviewed the issues prompting the House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings and expressed concern that members of the party might be participating in actions contrary to APC’s goals for the state.
“We are warning once more that this is unnecessary action, as we have seen the refusal from members of the House of Assembly, including those from the APC, to cooperate,” the statement said.
While acknowledging the Legislature’s constitutional power under Sections 129 and 188 to carry out impeachment, the party argued that the definition of “gross misconduct” is subject to political interpretation and cannot override party unity or objectives.
Call for Party Leadership Intervention
The APC urged its national leadership to act under Article 21(b)(iii) of the party’s constitution to prevent the party from facing a “difficult and shameful situation.” It also reiterated its call for the Chief Judge to respect the interim injunction issued in Suit No OYHC/7/CS/2026.
“The choice made by the legislative branch is a risky addition to the health and future of the APC in Rivers State,” the party said.
