APC Denies Backing Ganduje’s Alleged Push for One-Party State
No Plan to Eliminate Multiparty Democracy – APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied claims that it supports its National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in pushing for a one-party state in Nigeria. The party insists that it remains committed to democratic values and Nigeria’s multiparty political system.
APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, clarified the party’s position, stating:
“We are not saying Nigeria should become a one-party state. But we are building a party that will win elections at all times.”
This statement comes amid rising concerns from opposition parties and civil society groups who accuse the APC of attempting to consolidate political power and silence dissent.
Ganduje Reacts: APC Is Not Dictatorial
Dr. Ganduje also addressed the controversy, insisting that the APC is not a dictatorial organization. He emphasized that the party values internal democracy, dialogue, and inclusivity. He noted that the party’s goal is to strengthen its structures across the country to remain electorally competitive.
Opposition Parties Cry Foul
Opposition voices, particularly from the Labour Party, remain unconvinced. Marcel Ngogbehei, the party’s Director-General of Mobilization and Integration, alleged that the APC is orchestrating moves to weaken other political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
Ngogbehei warned that the ruling party’s tactics, including the absorption of opposition members, are part of a broader plan to make President Bola Tinubu a consensus candidate in the next election cycle.
APC Reiterates Commitment to Democracy
In response, APC officials maintain that their outreach efforts are part of democratic engagement and national development, not an attempt to override opposition. Party leaders argue that growth through political alliances is a norm in democratic systems and does not equate to a dictatorial takeover.
As political tensions simmer, the APC continues to walk a fine line between political dominance and democratic integrity ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
