Aliko Dangote Appointed to World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab to Drive Economic Growth

Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, has confirmed his acceptance of an appointment to the World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab, joining a select group of global business leaders. This new role will see Dangote collaborate with other prominent leaders to drive investment and job creation in emerging economies.

In 2023, Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, co-chaired the lab, focusing on attracting £1 trillion in sustainable investments to support energy transition efforts in emerging markets.

Dangote expressed his excitement and commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth. “I am both honoured and excited to accept my appointment to the World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab, dedicated to advancing investment and employment in emerging economies,” he stated. He also emphasized his long-standing commitment to sustainable development and cited the success of the Asian Tigers as an inspiration for replicating those results in other regions.

The World Bank announced Dangote’s appointment as part of the lab’s expansion, which aims to scale up initiatives that attract private capital and create jobs in developing regions. Alongside Dangote, notable business leaders including Bill Anderson, CEO of Bayer AG, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chair of Bharti Enterprises, and Mark Hoplamazian, President and CEO of Hyatt Hotels Corporation, are joining the lab’s expanded membership.

Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, highlighted that the expanded membership ties directly into the Bank’s strategy, with a sharp focus on job creation. “This isn’t about altruism—it’s about helping the private sector see a path to investments that will deliver returns, lifting people and economies alike,” Banga said.

The World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab has already brought together leaders from global financial institutions to address key barriers to private sector investment in developing countries. The efforts have been consolidated into five priority areas, including regulatory and policy certainty, which will now be integrated into the Bank’s operations.

Dangote Group, founded by Aliko Dangote, is the largest conglomerate in West Africa and one of the largest on the African continent. With interests in cement, fertilizer, salt, sugar, and oil, the group employs over 30,000 people and is Nigeria’s largest taxpayer, contributing more in taxes than the country’s banks combined. The $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, the group’s flagship project, is the largest private investment in Africa.

Beyond his business ventures, Dangote leads the Aliko Dangote Foundation, the largest private foundation in sub-Saharan Africa, focused on child nutrition, health, education, empowerment, and disaster relief.
