President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to making education accessible and affordable for millions of Nigerians. He emphasized that quality education is essential for national and economic growth and pledged continued funding and policy initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda to enhance the education sector.
Speaking at the ninth convocation of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) in Ekiti State, where 8,444 students graduated, Tinubu, represented by Obafemi Awolowo University Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, highlighted his administration’s efforts to support education. He pointed to the introduction of the student loan scheme, which has benefited over 300,000 students, as one of many measures aimed at easing financial burdens, especially for underprivileged Nigerians.
The president also announced the federal government’s decision to exempt universities from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to grant them more autonomy in managing their operations. He commended FUOYE’s leadership for maintaining uninterrupted academic activities and urged all tertiary institutions to remain committed to their mandates of learning, research, and community service.
During the event, four distinguished Nigerians—former Attorneys General and Ministers of Justice Kanu Agabi and Bayo Ojo, First Bank Managing Director Segun Alebiosu, and Air Peace Chairman Dr. Allen Onyema—received honorary doctorate degrees.Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, praised Tinubu’s support for FUOYE through TETFund special projects and the student loan scheme.
He urged the federal government to address the university’s high power generation costs, as it remains disconnected from the national grid.Vice Chancellor Professor Abayomi Fasina highlighted FUOYE’s progress, citing the completion of 156 projects under his leadership in the past four years.Speaking on behalf of the honorary awardees, Kanu Agabi expressed gratitude for the recognition and called on the federal government to increase funding for tertiary institutions nationwide.
