Princess Bright Makes History in Barking and Dagenham
Princess Opeyemi Bright has officially become the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom at the age of 29. Her inauguration as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham took place on May 16, 2025, marking a major milestone for Nigerian representation and youth leadership in UK politics.
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright has been active in public service since she was 22, when she was first elected as a councillor. Her work has focused on community development, youth engagement, and social inclusion.
A Legacy of Leadership
Princess Bright hails from a family with a strong history of public service. Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as the Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, while her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright, MBE, is a respected religious leader in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
During her swearing-in ceremony, the new mayor thanked her community and attributed her success to divine grace and family support.
“This is nothing short of God’s grace,” she said. “As a proud Nigerian, I am honoured to serve my borough and represent our shared values of integrity, humility, and service.”
