“Whatever Tinubu Asks Me to Do, I’ll Do” – Barau
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has reaffirmed his full loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, stating that he is ready to do anything the President asks of him — including serving as a running mate in the 2027 general elections if chosen.
Jibrin made the statement at a media briefing on the upcoming zonal public hearings for the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, which he chairs. His comments come amid growing speculation that he could be a potential running mate to President Tinubu in the next presidential race.
“Mr. President is my political father. You’ll be surprised if I start telling you what he has done for me and my people,” Jibrin said.
“So, whenever he asks me to do something when the time comes, I’ll do it. I’m loyal to him, 100 per cent.”
He noted that while various political groups have called for his consideration as running mate, he believes the current focus should remain on governance and national development.
“Bringing this issue [of 2027] up now is quite premature. I told those groups to channel their energy into supporting President Tinubu instead of politics. When the time comes, we’ll play politics. But now is the time for governance.”
Constitution Review Hearings Set for Six Zones
Barau also gave detailed updates on the ongoing work of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, which is currently evaluating 59 bills and 31 proposals. The committee is also receiving additional input through public memoranda.
The zonal public hearings will be held in the six geopolitical zones as follows:
South-South – Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom (chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio or his representative)
North-West – Kano (chaired by Barau Jibrin)
South-West – Lagos (chaired by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele)
North-Central – Jos (chaired by Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru)
North-East – Maiduguri (chaired by Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno)
South-East – Enugu (chaired by Deputy Chief Whip Peter Nwebonyi)
The hearings are part of efforts to ensure wide public participation in the constitutional amendment process.
