Hungry Nigerians Will Shape 2027 Election, Makinde Declares
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that hungry Nigerians, not political elites, will determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde made the bold statement on Wednesday in Ibadan during the official inauguration of the newly elected South-West Zonal Executive Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Hunger, Not Defection, Will Decide Nigeria’s Future
While addressing party members and stakeholders, the governor dismissed the impact of recent high-profile defections from the PDP, insisting that the real political power lies with the people, especially those battling economic hardship.
“We will not be bothered until hunger has decamped to the ruling party, APC. The day hunger decamps, they should come and tell us,” Makinde said.
“There is hunger in the land and the majority of the people that are hungry will determine what 2027 will look like.”
PDP Remains the Party of the Masses, Says Makinde
On Defections and Internal Confidence
Makinde urged PDP members not to be discouraged by the ongoing defections, which have included sitting governors and influential politicians.
“People have been asking us as leaders of this party where is the party going? I have good news: PDP is not going anywhere. We will stay with the people of Nigeria,” he stated.
Despite the political turbulence, Makinde affirmed that PDP remains the only party with enduring structures and institutions capable of representing the true aspirations of Nigerians.
Rising Discontent as Hunger Deepens Nationwide
Governor Makinde’s comments come amid a growing wave of economic hardship across Nigeria, with inflation, food insecurity, and unemployment plaguing many citizens. His remarks reflect a broader political sentiment that public discontent could override elite maneuvers in the next general election.
Observers say the 2027 elections could become a referendum on living conditions rather than party loyalty or political legacy.
Makinde Rallies PDP Faithful in the South-West
Makinde’s speech also served as a rallying call to the South-West PDP, urging unity and grassroots mobilization ahead of 2027. He stressed the importance of staying connected to ordinary Nigerians and prioritizing their needs over elite politicking.
“If any governors like, let them decamp. We will stay with the people,” he concluded.
