Opay Selects 20 UNIUYO Students for N1.2bn Scholarship Programme
Twenty exceptional students of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Akwa Ibom State, have been selected as beneficiaries of Opay’s N1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship initiative targeted at Nigerian universities.
Each selected student will receive N300,000 annually to support their academic and welfare needs.
The announcement was made during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Opay and the University of Uyo on Monday. The event was led by Opay’s Head of Partnerships, Ikponmwosa Odiase, alongside the university management.
Speaking at the ceremony, Odiase explained that the scholarship scheme is part of Opay’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at empowering Nigerian youth.
“We believe the students, our youth are the future of this country, and the best way to support them is through empowerment. That is why we launched this scholarship scheme,” he stated.
He added that the first phase of the project includes partnerships with 20 higher institutions across Nigeria. UNIUYO is the 11th institution to join the initiative.
“Today, we are offering scholarships to 20 students annually for ten years, with each receiving N300,000 every academic year. We believe this is a laudable investment in the future of Nigeria,” Odiase added.
Beyond scholarships, Opay also signaled intentions to deepen the partnership with UNIUYO through internship opportunities and employment creation for students.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor of UNIUYO, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, commended Opay’s generous gesture and urged other organizations to replicate such impactful interventions.
“It’s not about how long you stay in business but the positive impact you make. Opay is doing well, and I salute the company’s founders. Other organizations should emulate this initiative,” the VC said.
Prof. Ndaeyo also assured Opay of the university’s full cooperation and openness to further collaboration.
With this MoU, UNIUYO becomes the 11th beneficiary institution of Opay’s expansive N1.2 billion CSR-driven scholarship programme.
