Over 100 young girls from the Ogori community in Kogi State have been officially initiated into womanhood during the annual Ovia Osese Festival, a deeply rooted cultural celebration that highlights the values of purity, discipline, and maturity.
Held in the Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area, this year’s festival saw 103 virgin girls proudly presented to the community, having completed traditional rites of passage. The festival, which dates back to the 19th century, has grown into a prominent cultural event that preserves and promotes the identity and values of the Ogori people.
The initiates, often aged 15 and above, undergo a period of training and moral instruction under the guidance of respected elder women in the community. This preparation period includes teachings on domestic life, sexual responsibility, cultural values, and what it means to transition into adulthood with dignity.
The public celebration involves traditional dances, musical performances, beauty pageants, and communal feasts, drawing crowds from across Nigeria and beyond.
