Nigeria Police Crack Down on Officers in Viral Extortion Scandal
Abuja – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has begun disciplinary proceedings against six officers implicated in a viral extortion video recorded along the Benin bypass, where motorists were allegedly forced to either pay ₦5,000 or give fuel.
The incident, which triggered nationwide outrage, has been condemned by the Force as a breach of ethical conduct and professionalism.
Officers Face IGP at Force Headquarters in Abuja
The officers among them a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) serving as their supervisor were summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to meet with Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM.
The IGP described the extortion as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable,” ordering immediate commencement of disciplinary actions.
Queries Issued, Orderly Room Trials Commence
All six officers have received formal queries, while orderly room trials have commenced for those directly implicated in the footage. The trials will determine individual culpability and lead to appropriate sanctions under police regulations.
“This swift response reinforces our commitment to integrity, professionalism, and accountability,” the Police said in an official statement.
Police Urge Citizens to Report Misconduct
Reiterating its reform agenda, the Nigeria Police called on citizens to report unethical behavior, assuring that all such complaints will be treated with urgency and transparency.
“We will not tolerate misconduct. Officers found guilty will be held accountable without exception,” the Force reiterated.
